Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Management

Supporting older adults to stay safe, mobile, & independent at home

Hip and knee osteoarthritis can make everyday life increasingly challenging for older adults. Pain, stiffness, reduced strength, and fear of falling often affect walking, transfers, balance, and confidence at home. For both the afflicted and their families, this can be a worrying, confusing and difficult time, especially when a loved one is struggling to manage daily tasks safely.

Our clinicians understand and have had great success managing OA. We use evidence-based approaches to support older adults, focusing on pain reduction, safe movement, and maintaining independence at home.

In fact, our program is guided by Dr Cameron Little, a published author and leader in the field for knee OA management. We believe effective OA management goes beyond exercises and pain management alone; it’s about addressing the broader biological, psychological and social contributors to knee and hip OA pain, whilst progressing exercises in a sustained, graded safe way addressing biomechanical and neuromechanical contributors, to build confidence, support dignity, and help people continue living well in familiar surroundings.

Our therapists deliver tailored, in-home care designed around the individual’s abilities, health needs, and home environment, while also supporting families with clear guidance and reassurance.

How Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Management works at Best Physiotherapy

At Best Physiotherapy, we believe osteoarthritis care should be practical, personalised, and easy to access; particularly for older adults who are finding it harder to cope at home.

Here’s what you can expect when working with us:

A deep dive into your history and goals to pinpoint exactly how osteoarthritis is affecting your life.

We evaluate your biomechanical and neurological contributors to pain in your own environment to identify real-world solutions.

A custom, evidence-based program built specifically to adapt and strengthen your joints, improve functional movements and reduce daily pain

One-on-one, hands-on guidance through safe movements to build your confidence and mobility.

Engaging your support network with the tools and education needed to assist your recovery at home.

Systematic program progression to progress rehabilitation and adjust the plan to ensure you keep moving toward your goals.

Our goal is not just to manage pain, but to improve confidence, safety, and day-to-day independence at home.

    Our GLA:D®-Informed approach

Our clinicians are trained in the GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoarthritis) approach which is an internationally recognised education and exercise framework developed in Denmark for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis.

Australian research from the GLA:D® program has shown:

    • An average pain reduction of 36%
    • Reduced reliance on pain medication
    • Reduced perceived need for surgery
    • Meaningful improvements in joint confidence

The education and exercises used in this approach are designed to translate directly into everyday activities, such as walking, standing from a chair, and moving safely around the home. By improving strength and confidence with movement, older adults are better supported to stay active, manage symptoms, and slow functional decline.

We adapt these principles carefully for older adults, delivering them safely in the home and tailoring them to medical history, mobility levels, and personal goals.

Best Physiotherapy delivers self funded services under Home Care Packages (HCP) and NDIS. We also accept all Private Health funding. All services are delivered via home visits, providing comfort, familiarity, and reduced stress for older adults and their families.
